1988 Second Round Pick #22 Overall — Troy Mallette

There are conflicting reports about this draft pick.

Some sources indicate that this pick went from the North Stars to the Rangers in a trade involving Mark Pavelich. Perhaps most notably, the listing for Mark Pavelich on legendsofhockey.net indicates that Pavelich was "traded to Minnesota by NY Rangers for Minnesota's 2nd round choice (Troy Mallette) in 1988 Entry Draft, October 24, 1986". This is corroberated by the Rangers NHL web site, which states that Pavelich was "traded by Rangers to Minnesota in exchange for 1988 second-round draft pick (Troy Mallette) on Oct. 24, 1986."

However, we believe this accounting to be in error. First, there are reports that the draft pick included in the Pavelich trade was a fourth round pick:

The October 25, 1986 Star Tribune (Newspaper of the Twin Cities) reported as follows: "The North Stars acquired the rights for retired center Mark Pavelich from the New York Rangers on Friday. Now they figure the best way to get him into a Stars uniform is to let him go. ... The price? The 1987 fourth-round pick that Nanne gave the Rangers last month for left wing Brian MacLellan now becomes a third-round pick, which it would have been anyway if MacLellan scores 25 or more goals this season. If The Stars get Pavelich into a uniform, Nanne also would have to give up another third or fourth-round choice, depending on how much or how well Pavelich plays." Since Pavalich only played a dozen or so games for the North Stars at the end of the 1986-87 season, it makes sense the pick would have been a fourth round pick.

But the most conclusive report comes from two different articles in the New York Times. First, the October 25, 1986 edition reported the following: "According to the Ranger general manager, Phil Esposito, if the North Stars sign Pavelich, the Rangers would receive a future high draft pick. If Pavelich does not sign, the Rangers will receive a low pick in a future draft." Then, the November 14, 1986 New York Times reported the following: "This morning [Nov 13th], the Rangers sent Bob Brooke ... to the Minnesota North Stars for ... Tony McKegney, a left wing, Curt Giles, a defenseman, and the North Stars' second-round draft pick in 1988. The Rangers will also give Minnesota their fourth selection for that year." Then, at the end of that same article, it mentions: "Pavelich quit the Rangers last spring and Esposito recently traded his rights to Minnesota - in exchange for the fourth-round pick in 1988 that the Rangers are now sending back to the North Stars in the Brooke deal."
